PMID: 20871461 [Indexed for MEDLINE] These pseudo-tumoral forms of subperiosteal hematoma are more often described in young patients with severe hereditary neurological disorders (1), which are considered to cause delayed bone maturation and looseness of the connection between the periosteum and the underlying bone (2). Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit is one of the rare lesions that cause exophthalmos after craniomaxillofacial trauma. Presently, there is no consensus for how to treat this disease. What is bone marrow edema? Bone marrow edema is an area of changed density on the MR image that reflects either a traumatic bone bruise or a nontraumatic collection of the fluid within the bone. Subperosteal hematoma is rarely associated with extradural hematoma and orbital roof fracture. We report a case observed in a 16-year-old boy who developed exophthalmos, diplopia and visual loss after blunt head trauma. Computed tomography demonstrated the subperiosteal hematoma associated with a thin extradural hematoma and an orbital roof fracture.
